How I do Morning Basket Planning

I am using a Morning Basket with my preschooler, so I divide my activities into 6 categories: Creativity, Fine Motor Skills, Gross Motor Skills, Literacy, Math, and Problem Solving. If I find a category that doesn’t quite fit, like an animal life cycle activity, I’ll still add it to the basket! It’s not meant to be rigid, just to take the overwhelm out of planning.

As I find new activities, I add them to my Morning Basket Planner. This is so helpful because all I have to do on Friday afternoons when I plan for the upcoming week is click a few buttons for a new, customized Morning Basket plan!

I try to choose one activity per category. I find we do a fair mix of new and previously tried experiences. My preschooler loves her Joycat Alphabet Fishing Game so I include that at least every other week (and she usually drags it out even if it’s not there)! I also include playdough often but may change the theme. We could have a Spring themed playdough kit one week that turns into leaves the next week.

In addition to choosing one activity per category, I try to include at least one activity related to what we’re learning that week. This could be related to the Read Aloud for the week, something to extend our Nature Study, or even a musical activity!

My Morning Basket Planning in Notion

Morning Basket Planning in Notion is easy! I use my Notion Morning Basket Planner to save all of my activity ideas. When I sit down to plan for the week, I look in my main database for the week. When I find something I like, I check the “This Week?” checkbox to add them to my master Homeschool Planner for the week.

When I’m ready to prep, all of the materials I need are listed right there in the card. This includes any links or PDFs to print! I can quickly assemble my materials and get the activity ready to go. Then, I can click the “Prepped?” checkbox, which lets me know I have already put the activity in the basket.

And that’s it! At the end of the week, I indicate whether or not the activity was a favorite. This gets added to a special Favorite Activities View in my master Database. When I’m feeling uninspired or found all of our activities for the week flopped, I head over to the Favorite Activities View to find something I know will be loved!
