Start a Family Game Competition

Somehow Thanksgiving Day stretches on to last twice as long as a regular day. Fill that time with board or card games! Uno can be adapted and played with most ages, either individually or as a “team”. We love all board games but Sequence is especially fun for a larger group! I do suggest avoiding Monopoly though unless your family is more patient than most, it has always turned into a fight for ours!

Complete a Scavenger Hunt

Keep everyone busy with a scavenger hunt! While you’re busy cooking dinner send the kids outside or around the house on a Scavenger hunt! I’ve created three scavenger hunts that are print-and-go that are perfect for Thanksgiving!

  • Thanksgiving Scavenger Hunt

  • Fall Scavenger Hunt

  • Thanksgiving Parade Scavenger Hunt

Invite Someone New for Thanksgiving

Put an earnest invitation out to friends and family, your church, or even a local college to see if there is anyone who needs a place to go for Thanksgiving! There are always plenty of leftovers and you could really change someone’s day with your invite! Colleges always have students who can’t afford to go home or don’t want to make a long journey home for the holiday. Make it a point to try your best to add one new person to your Thanksgiving table!

Have a Centerpiece Competition

Thanksgiving decorations have gotten a bit boring as of late. Sure, they’re beautiful, but I’m a sucker for over-the-top decor. I think part of the shift comes from no longer perpetuating harmful stereotypes and people grappling with Thanksgiving as a holiday which I think is very good! But there is so much untapped potential with the turkey decor market!

While we wait for capitalism to fill in the Thanksgiving decor gaps, make your own! Have everyone in your family create a different centerpiece or decor item for Thanksgiving and appreciate your family’s creativity (or lack thereof).

Clean Up For Christmas

I try my hardest to wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas. Our Elf on the Shelf comes the morning after Thanksgiving and we always try to clean up the house for his arrival! We decorate on Friday and having a clean house makes it much easier to decorate!
