Why I Recommend Notion for Parents

If you’ve never used Notion before, prepare to be amazed! Notion is, at its core, a productivity app but it can do so much more than just house your to-do list! You can create a robust family calendar with views for each member of your family, organize household tasks, keep track of the neverending pile of papers sent home from school, store Christmas and birthday gift ideas until you need them, and track all of those kid tasks all in one place.

There’s so much you can do with Notion and best of all, it is completely customizable to your family and can be easily adjusted year to year or month to month to accommodate changing schedules, busy seasons, and more!

Once you set up your Notion Family Planner and start using it as your second brain, you’ll have more space in your life for all that family fun you plan but don’t always get to! And, when you wake up in the middle of the night with an idea for an event happening 6 months from now, you can quickly add it to your family Dashboard and have it safely stored away until you need it! No more random sticky notes with important ideas!

How to Set Up Your Notion Family Planner

Getting started with Notion can be…overwhelming at times. But it doesn’t have to be! Before you begin creating your Notion Family Planner, make a list, either on paper or in Notion, of everything you’d like to include in your planner. Think about previous planners you’ve used and what you’ve loved about them. Add all of your ideas to your list. And then just get started!

If there was a secret formula for creating a Notion Dashboard, I would share it with you! Unfortunately, the best way is to work on it a little bit each day until it’s done.

I do recommend starting with 2 Columns and putting a Calendar Database in one column. Then, slowly bring your list to life! You can also follow my 31 Day Dashboard Roadmap plan if you want more structure and tutorials for your Dashboard creation!

One more tip! Try to use the same Database for the majority of your Dashboard. It can be tempting to create a new Database for each family member or activity type to keep everything organized but it isn’t possible to put them on the same Calendar, which leads to issues and less organization later!

What to Include on Your Notion Family Dashboard

Stuck for ideas on what to include on your Notion Family Dashboard? Here are a few must-haves!

  • Calendar Database- Essential to every family planner!

  • Cleaning Schedule including kid’s chores

  • Pages for each child

  • School Quick Look with phone numbers, teachers names, etc.

  • Christmas Lists

  • Meal Planner

  • Shopping Lists

  • Babysitter info

  • Family Budget

  • Doctor and Dentist info with question lists for next appointments

  • Family Bucket List

  • Travel Planner

  • Holiday Trackers

  • Garden Planner

Managing Your Notion Family Calendar

Managing your Notion Family Calendar doesn’t have to be challenging! Here are some tips to help you get started!

Use One Database for Everything

As I mentioned above, creating a different database for each member of your family can be tempting but it will make it impossible to integrate your family calendar in the long run. By using one database, you can easily filter to see only the information you need.

Use Select Properties

Creating a Select Property for each family member will change the way your Calendar database flows! You can easily filter events by family member and create various views to help you see exactly who needs to do what and when!

Use Your Pages Wisely

Anything you add to your Calendar is automatically a new Page in Notion. This means you can store all the information you need about an event or task where it lives on your Calendar. No more switching between windows or searching for pages to find the information you need! Just add it to your Notion Calendar event one time and refer back to it as needed!

Family Management Made Easy with Notion

Families are busy. Between school, work, extracurriculars, and just fun times at home there’s a lot to keep track of! With Notion, you can store everything in one place and easily move, expand, and reschedule tasks and events to fit your family’s needs.

Notion can be your family’s second brain. Track school information, doctor’s office questions, driving permit hours, and friend’s parent’s phone numbers in a central family Dashboard that can be accessed whenever and wherever you need it!

The possibilities for supporting your family with Notion are endless. If it needs to be organized or written down, it can be done in Notion in an aesthetically pleasing, easy to access way!
