Valentine’s Day can be an exciting holiday and one where you show your family just how much you love each other. While many Valentine’s Day activities can be overwhelming or superficial, these 5 Valentine’s Day traditions will help you slow down and spend more intentional time with your loved ones!
Valentine’s Day Fairy
I’ve heard quite a few arguments against the Valentine’s Day Fairy (or Valentine’s Day baskets) but I think many adults expect some sort of gift, be it flowers or chocolates, on Valentine’s Day and why can’t kids get in on the fun?
The Valentine’s Day Fairy doesn’t need to bring anything elaborate. At our house, she brings a play silk, some candy, a book, and either a game or an activity book. For less than $30 you can create a pretty magical memory!
And The Valentine’s Day Fairy doesn’t have to bring anything! She could make cookies or sprinkle the table with glitter or leave a Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt!
Pink Breakfast
You’ll need to break out the food coloring for this one but it’s worth it! What’s more fun for Valentine’s Day than a pink and red feast! Pink pancakes (bonus points for heart-shaped), pink waffles, pink muffins, pink whipped cream, strawberries, and raspberries…a fully themed spread!
It may seem like a lot of work but if you’re anything like me, you don’t do elaborate breakfasts often. Much of it could be prepared ahead of time and your kids will love it!
We’ve also collected Valentine’s Day themed plates and glasses we use once a year for the holiday, it makes the breakfast (and later dinner) more magical!
Valentine’s Day Tea Party
This is one of my favorite ideas for Valentine’s Day! Have your kids (and their friends) dress up in their fanciest pink and red and have a Valentine’s Day Tea Party for lunch. You can make little heart-shaped cucumber sandwiches, red and white chocolate chip cookies, and serve tea or apple juice in a tea set.
During your party, read some favorite Valentine’s Day books, listen to classic love songs, or read poetry together. It’s a fun way to make the holiday a little more magical and meaningful!
Secret Acts of Kindness
This is a fun one, especially if you have outgoing kids! It does require a bit of pre-planning. Prior to Valentine’s Day, plan a few ideas for random acts of kindness for strangers or neighbors. You could hand out flowers at the grocery store, drop baked goods off at your neighbors’ house, or make cards for the local nursing home.
On Valentine’s Day, put your plan into action! Brighten people’s day and spread the love in your community! If you have a group of friends or family to join you, you could make a very big impact!
Candlelight Dinner
If you are spending Valentine’s Day home with your family, why not make it extra special! Even if you’re serving up mac and cheese from a box, set the table with candles and eat by candlelight!
If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you could have your kids make dinner for you. They will feel so grown up eating toast and apples that they made themselves by candlelight!
I hope these ideas help you create a new meaningful Valentine’s Day tradition for your family! What Valentine’s Day tradition are you most excited for?
