Tell Shadow Stories
Groundhog Day is all about seeing shadows or not! Even if the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, you can still make your own with this fun activity!
Before starting, it may be helpful to watch some Youtube videos on shadow puppets and making shadows with your hands. You could also cut puppets from construction paper and tape them to popsicle sticks as part of your storytelling.
Once you’ve prepared your shadow puppets, finger or otherwise, grab some flashlights and turn off the lights! The darker the room the better! If you don’t have room darkening curtains, pushing a table against the wall and hanging a tablecloth over the side is a great way to make a dark space. Or, head to a large closet or bathroom.
Whether you tell familiar stories or make them. upon your own, this activity will be memorable and keep everyone busy!
Make a Spring Bucket List
If the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow, it means it’s spring time! Either way, Groundhog day is a great day to make a spring bucket list to help you get through the next few weeks of winter.
Need ideas for what to add to your spring bucket list? Picnics, gardening, long days in the park, day trips to a nature preserve…your options are only as limited as your imagination!
Have a Groundhog Day Breakfast “Underground”
Your kids will definitely remember this one! On Groundhog Day, set up a fort in the living room (including the TV so you can watch the Groundhog Day ceremony!) to cover most of the room!
Serve breakfast on the floor, picnic style, in your fort! This is a silly way to enjoy the day but “Underground” breakfast is sure to delight your kiddos!
Shadow Measuring Experiment
This one works best if you have a paved driveway or sidewalk (that’s not covered in snow) but can be done in the snow with food coloring!
Have your kids stand somewhere that gets sunlight all day. Have one person trace the shadow or mark where it starts and stops with sidewalk chalk (or food coloring on snow or ice!). Come back outside every few hours and mark how their shadows have changed throughout the day!
Make Groundhog Day Cupcakes or Muffins
Groundhog Day cupcakes are easy to make! Just make regular cupcakes and frost. Then, add a Teddy Graham “groundhog” standing on top of the cupcake or peeking out from below the frosting. Enjoy as a special Groundhog Day treat!
You could also make these with muffins to save yourself on the sugar! It may be helpful to make these the day before if you want to eat them for Underground Breakfast!
I hope these ideas help you create a new meaningful Groundhog Day memories for your family! What Groundhog Day activity are you most excited for? Let me know over on Pinterest!
