Are you thinking about blogging in 2023 but aren’t sure why you should start a blog? Maybe you’ve heard blogging is dead or that you can’t make money with a blog. Guess what, it’s not true! I’m here to tell answer why start a blog in 2023 and why blogging is important!
If you’re wondering why start an online business this year, keep reading!
The most important thing to understand about blogging in 2023 is that it’s just different than it was 10 years ago! The wild west of blogging is over and there are more expectations of bloggers than there were when they were just getting started. A good shift in your thinking is that your blog is just part of your overall online business. I won’t get into revenue streams today but think of your blog as an advertisement for the content you get paid for. Whether you’re an influencer and create sponsored content or you’re creating ebooks to sell, your blog can support your business goals and help you make money online in 2023!
People Are Still Blogging, They Just Call Their Blog Posts “Articles”
Language is important but it also can be tricky. People who say blogging is dead often say it knowing that they still have a website and publish articles to it regularly.
I don’t think anyone will tell you having an online diary where you share your thoughts and plans with no direction or plan will be profitable. In that way, I guess blogging is dead.
But people haven’t been blogging that way and making money for at least a decade. Blogging has shifted to sharing content and value with your audience. Whether you call that a blog or a website, it’s still very valuable and demand is only increasing for quality information!
Affiliate Marketing is Growing as Revenue Stream
We are entering a new era of eCommerce shops and with it, affiliate marketing! More and more small businesses are opening opportunities for customers to become affiliates. If there’s a product you love, this can be a great way to make some extra money or develop an entire new revenue stream!
But you need somewhere to send people. Pinterest especially doesn’t love when you link directly to a product that’s not part of your website. But linking to a blog post optimized with keywords for both Pinterest and Google? That’s a surefire way to drive traffic and affiliate sales!
You Own Your Blogging Content
Your Instagram or TikTok could be shut down. Twitter recently took a major hit and may not survive. But your website is yours. If you’ve started an email list (and you should, here’s a post about how to do that), you can send people from your email list directly to your website without relying on an algorithm that may or may not change once a week.
Your content on your website will stay as long as you’d like it to stay. Your TikToks or Idea Pins or Reels could disappear tomorrow. Having blog posts is a way to keep your content and ideas on the internet without relying on social media.
Your Blog is “Free” Advertising for Your Digital Products or Services
Having a website means you can highlight how to use your digital products, why they’re important, and create a buzz around anything you’re putting out from your eCommerce shop.
By driving traffic to your blog, you’re increasing the odds you get sales from your shop. By optimizing your posts for SEO, you’re asking Google to hand you traffic that’s specifically looking for the solution you have. If your solution costs money, there will be people willing to pay that money!
Besides the obvious fees associated with keeping your website running, this is free advertising. And while we don’t rely on social media, you can get your posts on Pinterest (also for free) and send traffic directly to articles discussing your products. You can send your email list directly to your posts discussing your services. It’s a no brainer!
You Need Somewhere To Send Traffic
Whether you have a one page website or a multipage site, you need to send your traffic somewhere. People are more likely to stay on your page longer if you have many posts and articles for them to look through. The more pages you have to send people to, the more people you get to your site. The more people on your site, the higher your chances of getting them on your email list or to purchase a product.
Gone are the days we’re pretending we blog because it’s fun. Sure, it’s a fun job. But we wouldn’t be creating blog posts consistently, for years, day after day putting in hours of work, if they weren’t making us money. People know they make us money. The goal is to make money. And having a blog allows you to do just that!
